WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jim McDermott  (D-Wash.) released the following statement after President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union Address:

“As we have watched the gap between the rich and the poor grow, and opportunities for hardworking Americans disappear, it was refreshing to hear the President address the need to expand opportunities for our working and middle class. The divide in our country is stark and hope for a brighter future seems waning, but this doesn’t have to be our path.

“Now is the time to invest. In our economy, in our future industries, in our education, and in our people. Unemployment, Head Start, health care, food assistance, environmental sciences and biotechnology, and Pell grants—these things pay for themselves in a strong, industrious work force and a robust economy. We can revive the notion that hard work pays off and everyone is capable of success.

“Tonight the President called for a ‘year of action,’ something Americans are, no doubt, desperate for after 2013’s record-breaking inaction from Congress. I hope the President can live up to that call, as well as my colleagues in the House and Senate. It’s time to do better for the American people.”
