Tonight I will be voting against the unconstitutional H.R. 1797, or the "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act." I am deeply disappointed to see yet another bill by this Congress that assaults a woman’s right to choose. Criminalizing abortions at 20 weeks, without an exception for the health and based on highly contested science of “fetal pain,” is a cruel attack on women, their families, and the medical professionals sworn to defend their best interests.
Proposed coal export terminals in the Pacific Northwest would transport 100 million tons of coal through our state. It would would pose significant public health, environmental and traffic implications for local communities, including Seattle. This week, I re-introduced the True Cost of Coal Act, to impose a $10 per ton excise tax on extracted coal, creating a fund to be distributed to states with high coal transportation. Coal companies, not American taxpayers, should bear the true costs of coal.
